Irregular Disposal of Antibiotics: 140kg Along the Banks of a Stream in Suzano

In the past month, there was an alarming environmental incident in the region of Chácara Sete Cruzes neighborhood in Suzano, where 140 kilograms of high-cost medications were found irregularly discarded near and within a stream. Faced with this scenario, UTD Suzano was immediately summoned by Suzano’s Health Surveillance and the Municipal Department of Maintenance and Urban Services to ensure proper disposal, fully compliant with the stringent safety and treatment standards that are recognized hallmarks of the company.

Unfortunately, these episodes are recurrent due to a lack of information or malicious intent by some companies, seeking higher profits, they end up engaging in improper disposal, jeopardizing fauna, flora, and society as a whole, in addition to compromising the subsistence of future generations who will have natural resources even scarcer than we currently have. In facing such situations, the importance of awareness becomes evident.

It is also crucial to note that these occurrences are classified as environmental crimes and, in this case, are being investigated by the Civil Police. Unfortunately, these events are not uncommon, even with those responsible for risking imprisonment. It is essential to emphasize that not only those who carried out the disposal are held responsible but also the waste generators. In other words, if a company, clinic, or even an individual trusts a waste manager to dispose of their waste and this waste ends up in a stream, as exemplified in this case, the generator is as responsible as the managing company that improperly disposed of it.

UTD Suzano, the only ISO14001 certified for the proposed scope, is prepared to face challenges like this, in addition to offering solutions for other demands related to waste collection, treatment, and final disposal. It stands out as a reliable partner for those seeking to dispose of their waste safely, environmentally responsibly, and in compliance with all applicable regulations.
